where does it go!

im sure everyone thinks about this once or twice, but tonight its my turn, apparently.
sometimes it's like you close your eyes for a moment, and a whole hell of alot of time flies by, and a whole hell of alot of things build up, occur, get resolved and dissipate into the nothingness of the past, all before your very own eyes. who really remembers things that happened this morning, last night, two days ago, weeks, months, years ago? are the things that we remember, the things that stick out in our minds as real things, real events, real people...are they the things we should define our time, our lives, our own selves by?
Because when you look at the big picture of it all, much of life can seem ultimately inconsequential, and for most of it, moments come and go, people, places, events, moods, time itself...it all comes, and then it's done. so how do we define "time"?
as something that is lost to us? or something much more...a gift that is taken away much faster than we have owned it? if that's the case, then how can anyone classify how to, or how not to, use time well?
or maybe even, a cumulative substance that is lent to us for only the briefest of moments, that some choose to "use fully" while others choose to "squandor" it?
then again, maybe its just something that allows us to amass experiences, memories, moments, feelings, everything that can occur in the fraction of a second, but will not allow us a repeat of the exact same thing, in the same place, in the exact same time, ever again.
that being said, wouldn't it be utterly terrifying if in the future, time was a substance to be bought, sold, or stolen on a whim?
if that's ever possible, then it's over and out for me, captain.
